Three empties cover one full takes the fullness/emptiness concept to a new level. In the Hao style, both arms and one leg must always be ready to transfer – this is known as “empty”. The remaining leg must always be stable – this is what is known as being “full”.
This technique is essential in both the Walking Frames (Form) and Hand-Fighting (Push-Hands). While most of the weight is placed on one leg in Three Empties cover one full, the mind needs to be equally aware of the three empties to maintain a constant balance throughout the body. Ultimately, a practitioner’s real abilities (fullness) will never reveal themselves, and the intentions (emptiness) will never be neglected.
Practicing Hand-Fighting (Push-Hands) will help to understand the importance of storing and hiding power from the opponent until it is time to issue power. An empty mind is essential to controlling the momentum so it does not become apparent to the opponent, while still having all the momentum there.
